7 Reasons to Warm Up to Lemon Water.
Your new life-changing, morning ritual (and a veritable cure-all): a cup of warm, filtered water with half the juice of a lemon before anything else. Even coffee (gasp). It may not be easy to create this new habit if you are used to an instant caffeine boost first thing in the morning but the benefits outweigh the change (isn’t that always the truth?) so stick with it and it will soon be a delicious, detoxifying, immune boosting, morning practice.
“Why?” you ask? Here are 7 answers:
1.Immune System BOOST
Lemons contain high amounts of Vitamin C and potassium. Vitamin C is great for fighting colds and potassium stimulates brain and nerve function and helps control blood pressure.
2. Get some weight off
Lemons have a lot of pectin fiber, which helps fight hunger cravings. It’s also proven that maintaining a more alkaline diet will help you lose weight faster. And simply starting your day with a great choice like this will help you make better choices the rest of the day.
3. Balance your pH
Lemons are an alkaline food, believe it or not. True, they are acidic on their own, but inside our bodies they’re metabolized and alkaline. Keeping your body alkaline balanced is one key to good health. Let the lemons help you out.
4. It’s a natural diuretic
Lemons help increase the rate of urination in the body. Toxins are released faster which helps keep your bladder healthy and happy. We love a happy bladder.
5. Better Digestion
Warm (not hot) water serves to stimulate the gastrointestinal tract and peristalsis-the waves of muscle contractions within the intestinal walls that keep things moving (you might have regular pooping right after the lemon water – just to let you know). Lemons and limes are also high in minerals and vitamins that help clear toxins in your digestive tract.
6. Pretty, Shiny, CLEAR Skin
Whoa. Big Plus. Vitamin C helps decrease wrinkles and blemishes. Lemon water purges toxins from the blood: clean blood = clear skin.
7. Hydrate your Lymph System
This simple cup of healthiness will help you start the day on a hydrated note, which helps prevent dehydration (obviously). When your body is dehydrated, or deeply dehydrated (adrenal fatigue) it can’t perform all of its proper functions, which leads to toxic buildup, stress, constipation, and a whole host of other nasty ailments. Your adrenals are two small glands that sit on top of your kidneys, and, along with your thyroid, create energy. They also secrete important hormones, including aldosterone. Aldosterone regulates water levels and the concentration of minerals, like sodium, in your body, which helps you stay hydrated. Your adrenals are also responsible for regulating your stress response.
Bottom line: STAY HYDRATED to stay happy. Especially true for you hot yogis.
Okay – so what have you got to lose? Absolutely nothing. And you have all this to gain.
Hints, Tips and Tricks: Buy freshly squeezed lemon juice at your favorite natural foods store to save time and freeze it in an ice cube tray. Pop one cube in the warm water and then sweeten it with a tiny bit of all-natural Stevia or local honey to take some of the tart out. Then you sip your way to good health! You can also use a straw to help protect your tooth enamel from the acidity. Cheers!
